The original community, planted on 640 acres forested with scattered oaks, was established in 1824 by land speculators John Allen of Virginia and Elisha Rumsey of New York. Legend has it that the settlement came to be called Ann Arbor in honor of the wives of Allen and Rumsey, both of whom were named Ann. Arbor apparently referred to the area's natural groves. A variation on the origin of the name says that it came from Ann d'Arbeur, who much earlier had led pioneers through the Huron River wilderness. Since the opening of the University of Michigan in 1841, Ann Arbor has emerged as the education capital of the Midwest. Incorporated in 1851, Ann Arbor is just 40 miles southwest of Detroit and is the seventh largest city in the state.
